This section of the Kerry Way starts on the N71, Ring of Kerry Road at Derrycunihy Church, (next to Galway's Bridge). Immediately after crossing the road, the trail turns off into a an oak forest. Over the following 2.5km the path descends to the level of the Upper Lake on a dirt track at first but then connecting onto a firm gravel path.
(There is another access point (as seen on the trail map) with a smoother path if traveling by bike.
Lord Brandon's Cottage (cafe) is the perfect place for a break before returning or continuing on through the Black Valley or up to the Gap of Dunloe from there.
(Cafe open from March 17 to end of October)
This route has a bit of everything.... mountains, lakes, forest, river with waterfalls, grassy open areas and even wild deer.
