This trail is a part of Reykjavegur, a hiking path that leads all the way from Þingvallavatn to Reykjanesviti at the tip of the Reykjanes peninsula. This part of the path leads through one of the valleys, Marardalur, at the root of the central volcano Hengill. Both ends of the trail are close to the biggest geothermal power plants in Iceland, Nesjavellir- and Hellisheiði power plants, which provide Reykjavík and the southern coast of Iceland with hydrothermal electricity and hot water.

The trail is very diverse with remarkable tuffstone formations and grass grown valley. The valley is a graben closed on all sites be steep hills. Making use of this, people used to keep bulls during the summer. A small brook runs through the valley and it might be difficult to jump from stone to stone to cross it so maybe one should rather wade it barefoot.
